On the 10th of March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced what she is calling "the scariest moment" of her life and is now sharing her story in a YouTube video titled "telling my story".
In the video, Hailey revealed that after she experienced stroke-like symptoms and was rushed to the hospital on that fateful day, she had to undergo a follow-up procedure to close a hole in her heart.
Talking about the day, she said it started normally with her enjoying breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber.
"We were in the middle of talking, and all of a sudden I felt this really weird sensation that travelled down my arm from my shoulder all the way down to my fingertips," she explained.
When Justin asked if she was ok, she could not speak and the right side of her face just started drooping. She thought she was having a full-blown stroke.
Justin asked someone to call 911 and she was rushed to the hospital. She explained how it was very scary for her, she was so scared and did not know what was going on. According to her, she experienced facial drooping for about 30 seconds and continued to struggle with her speech as a nearby medic asked her questions and tested her arms.
By the time she had reached the emergency room, she said she felt normal again but the doctors insisted on keeping her overnight and performed a lot of tests on her.
Doctors told her that she experienced a transient ischemic attack, or TIA, which is a temporary period of symptoms similar to those of a stroke. It is caused by blood clots stopping blood supply to the brain. Although similar to a stroke, it normally lasts for only a few minutes and doesn't cause permanent damage.
She then explained that after she was discharged, she underwent follow-up testing at UCLA, where doctors discovered that there was a hole between the right and left chambers of the heart which probably caused the blood clot to escape through the hole and travel to her brain which is the reason for the TIA.
Hailey also explained that the three main factors that caused the blood clot were her getting on birth control without consulting her doctor, COVID-19 and her long flights to and from Paris during which she didn't stand or move.
She also said that she now takes aspirin and a blood thinner regularly and even underwent a procedure to close the hole in her heart.
"I'm recovering really well, really fast. I feel great," Hailey said. "I just feel really relieved that we were able to figure everything out, that we were able to get it closed, that I will be able to just move on from this really scary situation and just live my life."
