The prolonged marital issues between renowned film director Syamsul Yusof and his first wife, Puteri Sarah, have come to an end as the couple finalized their divorce through talak satu at the Syariah Lower Court today.
Syamsul, whose birth name is Mohd. Syamsul Mohd. Yusof and aged 39, pronounced talak satu at 12:25 PM in the presence of Syarie Judge Akmalluddin Ilyas. This followed the court's approval of Puteri Sarah's divorce petition, filed under Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984.
Judge Akmalluddin subsequently declared the divorce and directed Puteri Sarah, also known as Puteri Sarah Liyana Megat Kamaruddin, aged 38, to observe a three-month waiting period known as iddah and register the divorce.
Before uttering the divorce pronouncement, Puteri Sarah seized the opportunity to bid farewell to Syamsul by kissing his hand for the last time. Both individuals appeared composed during the emotional moment.
On May 25th, the Syariah Lower Court revealed that there was no possibility of reconciliation between Syamsul and Puteri Sarah, given the mediation committee's assessment of prolonged conflicts (shiqaq) and the involvement of a third party.
During the proceedings, Puteri Sarah was represented by syariah lawyer Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader, while Syamsul was represented by syariah lawyer Azmi Mohd. Rais.
On March 24th, after undergoing the mediation process at the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) in Kuala Lumpur, Puteri Sarah expressed her disappointment in the failed attempts to find a resolution. She firmly stated that further negotiation or discussion was unnecessary, as she had firmly resolved to proceed with the divorce, closing her heart to the possibility of reconciliation.
Earlier, on April 18th, the couple was expected to document a settlement agreement reached during a meeting. On that day, Syamsul was also meant to pronounce the talak to Puteri Sarah. However, legal actions involving Ira Kazar and the reduction in the amount of child maintenance claims complicated the divorce proceedings between Puteri Sarah and Syamsul.
As the divorce has been officially concluded, the future paths of both individuals remain uncertain.
