In a poignant TikTok video, a woman known under the username @mastura_aaaaaaa uploaded a rant sharing her concerns about the financial challenges she faces as a graphic designer in Kuala Lumpur. Despite holding a degree, she revealed that she was only offered a monthly salary of only RM1,600, just slightly above minimum wage.
She then raised a question about how one could manage to survive in the cosmopolitan city of Kuala Lumpur with such a salary.
On the other hand, she revealed that she was offered a much higher wage when interviewing for a retail job. She then underscored the stark salary disparity between fresh graduates with degrees or diplomas, earning less than RM2,000, and those working in the retail industry who enjoy higher pay scales, with a starting salary of RM3000, for example. Expressing her frustration, she brought attention to the financial struggles experienced by degree holders in Kuala Lumpur, especially when compared to the more lucrative opportunities available in the retail sector.

People in the comments shared words of support, advising her to think about gaining more experience, noting that many jobs these days value candidates with a significant work history. Some users agreed with her point about retail jobs often paying more than certain corporate positions. However, they also acknowledged that working in the retail sector presents its own set of challenges and can be emotionally demanding.
