A Malaysian man named Jian Feng (not his real name) won the TOTO jackpot around a decade ago while visiting his family in Penang.
The win was worth a low seven-figure sum in Malaysian Ringgit, and he found out about it only weeks later when he checked his wallet. While he was ecstatic to win, he also became paranoid about losing it or experiencing misfortune. "I was so scared. It was just this deep-seated fear that something bad was about to happen. I don't know what, " he said. This paranoia lasted a week, during which he barely slept or ate.
Eventually, he went to a therapist who advised him to take a break and spend time dividing his fortune into various financial investments. Feng also decided to beef up his security measures, including his apartment's windows, doors, and surveillance system. Despite his newfound wealth, Feng still lives in the same middle-class apartment building where he grew up, and he maintains his anonymity by limiting his online presence.
Feng's family is unaware of his TOTO winnings, but he has paid off their mortgages and maxed out their EPF and SOCSO accounts. "It's a secret that not even my wife knows exactly how much I'm worth." He has also handpicked a team of lawyers, accountants, and investment advisors to manage his fortune. "One day, my family will find out... when they read out my will."
Feng now enjoys financial freedom but says that he is not interested in buying luxury goods. "Financially, I have the power to buy pretty much anything I want, but somehow things like branded bags, luxury clothes and expensive-to-maintain cars just doesn't have the same appeal it once did."
