A chemical spill incident at the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Penang Campus, located on Tunku Kudin Avenue, required the immediate intervention of the Fire and Rescue Team.
The incident came to light when a vigilant laboratory assistant noticed the spill and promptly contacted the emergency line.
Fauzian Izzuan Abdullah, the Chief of Operations at the Perak Road Fire and Rescue Station, revealed that the call for assistance was received at 4:48 PM. In response, a rapid deployment of 16 team members, including the specialized Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) unit from the Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station, was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arriving at the IPG Penang Campus laboratory, the response team discovered that the chemical spill had originated from a broken bottle, affecting 10 containers of 'Sodium Dihydrogen' chemicals, with a combined volume of 500 milliliters.

Taking immediate action, the rescue team secured the area by evacuating any individuals from the building and ensuring their safety. Subsequently, after identifying the spilled chemical, they executed a meticulous decontamination process to mitigate potential hazards.
Importantly, the incident occurred after regular classes had concluded, and no individuals or activities were present within the laboratory. Intriguingly, it was revealed that the catalyst for the chemical spill was an oyen that had ventured into the room, inadvertently causing the bottle to topple.
