In a stern address at the 28th Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN) Revenue Day celebration, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim underscored the importance of humanizing tax enforcement efforts. He stressed the need for LHDN to approach tax evasion cases with persistence and courage, urging the tax authority to consider the individuals involved, regardless of their social status or connections, including wealthy individuals and large corporations.
Anwar highlighted the necessity for the tax authority to maintain a compassionate and proactive stance. As reported by Sinar Harian, he advocated for actions such as searches, against individuals or entities failing to fulfill their tax obligations. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of dispelling the notion that influential figures could escape tax consequences based on their status, emphasizing the primary focus on encouraging tax compliance rather than punitive measures.
"In our pursuit, whether they are named Ahmad or Ah Sin or hold titles like Tan Sri or Tun, it doesn't matter. What matters is whether they fulfill their tax duties. If they don't, we must search and take action that is commendable," affirmed the Prime Minister, emphasizing the need for fairness in enforcing tax regulations.
Drawing from personal experiences, Anwar reflected on challenges faced during his tenure in the previous Cabinet, where major companies grappled with tax payments. Using metaphors like giants and dragons, he acknowledged the intricate nature of dealing with significant entities and the need for a nuanced approach.
Expressing genuine admiration for LHDN's recent accomplishments, the Prime Minister commended the tax authority for its audacious approach.
