A freak lightning strike on a Mexico beach recently left two people dead, while the other was badly injured. The horrifying incident was caught on video and soon spread like wildfire on various social media outlets.
Like the wrath of the Norse thundergod Thor before the deadly thunder strike, the weather at that time was dark and stormy. Beachgoers could be seen quickly packing up their personal belongings until it finally happened.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning came down from the sky above which directly hit the first person...and then instantly traveled like a wave of current across the sand electrocuting the other person...both fell to the ground, causing onlookers nearby to panic and flee.
According to Mexican authorities, the victims were a male tourist and a female beach peddler. A spokesperson also said the woman instantly died on the spot, and the man later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital while undergoing treatment.
Despite most people suffering from astraphobia like you and me, studies have shown that only 1 in 15,300 people would get hit by lightning. However, those residing in rural Mexico are an exception. As one of the most poverty-stricken nations in the world, it has the worst lightning death rate in the Americas - with an average of 220 fatalities a year.
