A teenage boy sustained severe injuries after being impaled by a bamboo pole when the motorcycle he was riding collided with the rear of a four-wheeled drive loaded with bamboo sticks parked by the side of the road at Kilometer 29 of Jalan Gua Musang-Jeli, on the Pulau Setelu bridge, here, yesterday.
In the incident that occurred at 9:30 PM, the victim, 13-year-old Mohammad Ammar Hazriq Zuhan, who is also a first-year student at Tengku Bendahara National Secondary School (SMK), was impaled by a two-meter-long bamboo pole in his abdomen.
Gua Musang District Police Chief, Superintendent Sik Choon Foo, said the victim was rushed to Gua Musang Hospital by members of the public for initial treatment before being referred to Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital (HSIP) in Kuala Krai.
"Initial investigations found that the victim was on his way to fishing. Upon reaching the scene, the Honda EX5 motorcycle ridden by the victim collided with the rear of a four-wheeled drive loaded with bamboo sticks parked by the side of the road.
"A two-meter-long bamboo pole pierced through the victim's abdomen. He was taken to the hospital for initial treatment and later sent to HSIP for further treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and negligent driving," he said in a statement here today.
He urged road users to exercise caution when working on roadways and to provide proper signals to other road users. According to him, further investigations are still ongoing.
