KOTA BHARU: A senior citizen laborer pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today to charges of sexually assaulting his friend's daughter, last year.
The 61-year-old accused made the confession after the charges against him were read out before Judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin.
According to the charge, he was accused of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in the garden of a house in Pasir Puteh at about 2pm in June 2020.
The charge is made under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offenses against Children Act 2017 and is punishable under Section 14 of the same act which provides for imprisonment not exceeding 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
Earlier, Ahmad Fariz did not offer bail because the accused was a friend of the victim's father who was scared that the accused might disturb the child.
The court, however, allowed bail of RM15,000 with one surety, including the additional condition that the accused must report to the nearest police station every month.
Judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin set October 20 as the date for re-mention of the case and to hand down the sentence.
The accused did not pay the bail set by the court.
