It’s couch potato season. So, stock up on some delicious snacks and get a nice, fluffy and comfy blanket for days of binge watching and eating.
If you’re into mystery, murders and misdirection then you have to watch British crime shows. They are clever and each event that happens is calculated and properly planned out to give you the perfect amount of suspense and mystery. Plus, let me just point out that the accent is another benefit for sure.
Here are the BEST British crime shows on Netflix:
1. Sherlock
If you haven’t watched this, then here’s a sign from the universe. Go now and watch it! This show has been praised for the quality of its writing, acting, and directing. I couldn’t agree more!
It consists of 4 seasons, each containing 3 episodes. It follows a consulting detective Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) solving various mysteries in modern-day London assisted by his flatmate and friend, Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman).
2. Peaky Blinders
For all you long series lovers, Peaky blinders has 5 seasons with 6 episodes each. It is a historical drama set in Birmingham, England after WWI.
It follows a gangster family of Irish Traveller or Romani, the Peaky Blinders gang and their ambitious and highly cunning boss Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy). Soon, Chester Campbell, an inspector, decides to nab him and put an end to the criminal activities.
3. Marcella
Marcella is a British "Nordic"-noir detective series stars Anna Friel as Marcella Backland, a former London detective who returns to work to investigate an open case from 11 years earlier involving an unidentified serial killer who appears to have become active again.
Marcella also has to deal with a hectic home life while dealing with her mental disorders. This series has crime, murders and drama jam-packed into 3 seasons with 8 episodes each.
4. Bodyguard
You want something involving politicians and some action then Bodyguard is the British TV show to watch. Bodyguard is a British political thriller series following Police Sergeant David Budd (Richard Madden), a British Army war veteran suffering from PTSD, who is now working for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service.
If you hate commitment and prefer a one-time fling, Bodyguard only has one season with 6 episodes. Hmm the perfect fling that is also kind of serious as it also comments on many issues regarding the controversy around government monitoring of private information and its regulation, and also on PTSD.
5. Hinterland
Another mind-blowing, absolutely amazing 3 part “Welsh”-noir crime show that takes place in Wales' sea town Aberystwyth with its mountainous backdrop.
It isn’t a cliché crime show with repetitive and predictable investigative processes. It has no heroes and no villains, just only ordinary people dealing with normal emotions like anger and pain in different ways. Another plus point is the beautiful Welsh setting, just perfection.
