A taxi driver allegedly strangled a young guy during an argument in Johor Bahru after he grumbled that the fare quoted to him was excessively high.
A man witnessed the incident after which he uploaded it anonymously on the Singapore Shout Out Facebook page.
The individual who recounted the incident spotted a cab driver sitting by the side of the road while he was waiting for a bus at JB Central. When a young man asked the driver how much it would cost to travel to Larkin Bus Terminal, the driver responded that it would be RM60. For reference, the journey would roughly take about 21 minutes.
The young man went to question other drivers because he thought the advertised price was excessive. The first driver pursued the young man and sought his opinion on what would be considered a fair rate for a cab. The young man then retorted that taking Grab would only cost him RM12 for the trip. The driver became agitated when he was accused of overcharging the young man.
The witness claimed that after a brief altercation between the two, the driver attacked the young man from behind and nearly strangled him with his arms. A nearby auxiliary police officer noticed the young man's loud screams and instructed the driver to release his hold.
According to the anonymous poster, none of the other drivers came forward to help. ""When the young man begged for witnesses, they were instead chatting, grinning, and watching the live spectacle. What specific steps should be taken to punish this driver?"
The witness recalled that the police came in time before the incident could escalate any longer.
