"Sorry, Malays Only!" M'sian Indian Claims She Was Discriminated While Job Hunting At Tealive

An Indian woman has come forward to tell her story of being discriminated in a recent incident following her vacancy enquiry at a local Tealive, a famous beverage chain in Malaysia as well as worldwide.

Harneesh Kaur shared her disbelief and disappointment at her encounter at a nearby Tealive establishment in a three-minute TikTok video that has now gone viral. She claimed that she was seeking employment at the time and made the decision to inquire about openings there. One of the employees allegedly rejected her when she inquired about openings and was told that they would only consider applications from Malays.

To which she responded, "Excuse me, sorry?"  and the staff reiterated the criteria, which left her dumbfounded.

She then returned home and reached out to the company's customer service in hope for some clarification regarding the requirement and whether such policy existed. The corporation asserted that there are no such requirements and that all ethnicities and religions are welcome to apply. Harneesh decided to return to the establishment to confront the same staff.

She explained to the staff that she had gotten in touch with the company's customer service to inquire regarding the criteria that was mentioned previously and discovered that it did not, in fact, exist. The staff member responded by extending the application form to her and stating, "Nevermind then, just fill out this application form."

Harneesh ultimately declined it, saying that she refused work in such a toxic workplace if this is the sort of treatment she would be receiving.

Towards the end of the video, Harneesh expressed her hope that kindness would be practiced more in the future when it comes to reducing discrimination against jobseekers. She did not disclose the location in which the incident took place, however Harneesh urges Tealive to address this matter and to be more diligent in hiring their employees.

Tealive has yet to respond.
