One other way to save money on groceries is by getting the freshest ones, that way it can last longer, and your money does not go to waste. Most of the time when we buy vegetables, fruits and meat that’s the case. But actually, if you know the right way to choose your raw produce, you will not have the problem.
Here are some tips and tricks when choosing your raw produce:
+ Leafy Green Vegetables
Firstly, you obviously have to look at the leave and make sure they don’t look withered. Make sure there’s no decolourization at the corners. If they are old, they would look slightly yellowish.
Also, make sure you take the veggies that have some holes in the leaves. When there are holes, it shows you that there were caterpillars on the leaf and that shows that no pesticides were used on the plant.
+ Cauliflower and broccoli
For broccoli, it is the same thing, make sure it looks super green and not yellowish on the top. Make sure there’s also no soggy clusters on the top. A fresh cauliflower will not have black spots on the top. If you see black spots pick another one.
+ Onions
For onion you want to press it gently with your palm and it has to be hard. It you feel that it is slightly soft or squishy, that means that there might be a layer of rotted onion that will make your whole onion go bad within days. Besides that, try to make sure that there are no holes.
+ Garlic
With garlic, you want to peel out the outer layer of the skin and look at each clove making sure none of them are bad. Just like the onion, one bad clove of garlic can make your whole garlic bad.
+ Meat
If possible, always get your meat fresh from the market instead of going to supermarkets. If you’re getting prepacked meat or meat that has already been cut up then you will have to make sure that the chicken looks pink, make sure there’s no blue spots on the skin because that will mean that the chicken died because of disease or incorrectly processed.
Also, make sure the meat is not yellow, that means that it is old.
If you can, use your finger and touch the meat, put slight pressure on it, if it bounces back then it is fresh. Chicken should not be slippery and sticky, her meat should be firm. The skin in the wing and thigh should also be still stuck to the flesh.
+ Fish
Fresh fish should have a mild scent and moist flesh and appear freshly cut. Don't purchase fish that has a strong, fishy odour.
Whole fish should have bright, bulging eyes and bright red or pink gills. If the eye is milky, then it is old. You can check the gills by lifting the head up and looking in it at the gills that look like a traditional Chinese fan.
