A Twitter page claiming to represent "a group of academicians, researchers and public health experts" and the "Public health consultants to Malaysian government" has tweeted a rather racist remark in their congratulatory post for Michelle Yeoh's Oscars win.
In the post, they tweeted, "Congratulations. But we must be more proudest when won by Muslim Malay Malaysian."
This, obviously did not sit well with Malaysians. One user replied, "Why does it have to be (about) race every time. Celebrate that a Malaysian made it on that pedestal. Be happy for her." Another one joined in and said, "As a muslim malay Malaysian, I'm not proud of this tweet."
One other Twitter didn't hold back in voicing his opinions denouncing the tweet and replied: "Just appreciate the fact that she won. Please don't put "Malaysia" in your identity if you are going to pull someone down just to make an irrelevant, nonsensical point."
Racism is a serious issue that must be eliminated, all the more so in a mixed cultural nation like ours. Regardless of our beliefs or skin colour, a Malaysian will always be, at heart, a native of our country.
