The surge in sex toy sales in Malaysia has raised concerns, particularly after the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) Enforcement and Control Division uncovered a storage facility housing these items on January 29th.
Nik Yusaimi Yussof, Secretary of the KDN Enforcement and Control Division, revealed that during a raid in Masai, sex toys were openly sold in establishments dealing with cosmetic, health, and souvenir products, both online and offline.
Three women and a man, believed to be in their 30s, were detained to assist in the investigation, as mentioned by Yusaimi.
From January 18th to February 6th, the division successfully seized 2,295 units of sex toys valued at an estimated RM70,000 in operations across Johor, Sarawak, Penang, and Perak.
Johor recorded the highest seizure, with 2,012 units valued at RM37,350. The case is also the largest as it involves a storage facility.
Yusaimi provided details of the operations, stating, "On January 18th, we raided a store in a shopping center in Kuching, Sarawak, and seized 135 units of sex toys with an estimated value of RM10,890.50. On February 6th, two raids were conducted in stores within shopping centers in Bayan Lepas, Penang, and Ipoh, Perak, recording seizures of 102 units (RM15,372) and 46 units (RM6,050), respectively."
To add into perspective, throughout 2023, the KDN Enforcement and Control Division seized various sex toys with a total estimated value of RM1.3 million.
Emphasizing the need for intensified enforcement, Yusaimi expressed concerns about the easy availability of sex toys, ranging from RM50 to RM300. He suspects these items are imported from China to meet market demand, despite their sale being prohibited in the country due to conflicting cultural and societal values.
