A lot of people has been questioning about the facticity of "Launching the LRT project in Penang", whether it is possible or true.
In fact, penang government is currently doing the preparatory work. Here you go, just take a look at all the Penang new public transport lines!
Down below is the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) map. (2 LRT lines, 3 monorail lines, 1 tram & 1 BRT line)
So basically, there will be a total of 7 lines and 130 stations. LRT lines : Bayan Lepas LRT, Ayer Itam Monorail, Tanjung Tokong Monorail, George Town Heritage Tram, George Town - Butterworth LRT, Raja Uda - BM Monorail, Permatang Tinggi - Batu Kawan BRT.
# 1 Bayan Lepas LRT
Bayan Lepas line will be the first LRT line to be constructed as the it is now one of the penang government priority transport plans and definitely plays a big role in penang future transport system. Bayan Lepas line stretches from Penang International Airport to Komtar, with a total of 27 stations in which 3 are interchange stations. And it goes along the coast so all the breathtaking views will just come into your sight.
Interchange station 1: The light ( connecting to Seberang Perai and Penang Sentral)
Interchange station 2 : Sky Cab (literally cable car, connecting to Penang Sentral)
Interchange station 3: Komtar (kind of like the centre of city which connects to all other LRT lines in Penang island)
# 2 Ayer Itam Monorail
With Komtar as the starting point/main interchange station (so that passenger can interchange to other LRT lines), Ayer Itam Monorail line connects to Majestic Heights and also allows the access to time square, stadium, Han Chiang school, masjid negeri, etc.
# 3 Tanjung Tokong Monorail
Similarly, with Komtar being the starting/terminal station, Tanjung Tokong Monorail connects to Tanjung Bungah. Certainly it can be accessed to Gurney and Gurney Paragon as well. This is definitely a good news for the people who would like to spend their time for a movie, karaoke and shopping !!! Plus currently there are man-made island project ongoing and surely a new spot to chill out then~
# 4 George Town Heritage Tram
The Heritage Tram consists of 6 stations and can be accessed to Lebuh Chulia, Lebuh Kimberly, etc. Obviously, this line is meant for the foodie ! Anyway CM Chow had stated before that due to land and space limitation, tram may be replaced by other transport.
The blue and green line refers to the Penang CAT bus line.
# 5 George Town - Butterworth LRT
It connects from The Light to Sg Nyiur, while it can be accessed to Seberang Perai, Penang Sentral and Jetty.
There are two interchange stations; interchange station 1: Penang Sentral (connects to island The Light station/Sky cab station); interchange station 2: Sg Nyiur (interchange to Raja Uda station).
# 6 Raja Uda - BM Monorail
Raja Uda line consists of 21 stations and 8 interchange stations. The dotted line refers to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. There may be BRT line to Kepala Batas from Raja Uda in future.
Some may ask what is BRT ? Well BRT is no different from other bus but just that they have their own route (segregated path). Just take a look at the photo below.
# 7 Permatang Tinggi - Batu Kawan BRT
It connects from Permatang Tinggi to Batu Kawan and in future it may further connect to Nibong Tebal.
Reading up to here, is there any station nearby your house ?
Right here I encourage all Penangnites to take public transport (but with the condition that it is cheaper and time-saving)!!!
