Happened in Masjid Al-Hasanah, Taman Rakyat at 6 am today, a muezzin was set on fire by a total stranger. According to Harian Metro, the victim, Amri Budin, aged 65 years old, was badly injured on the face, hand and the right side of his body.
The victim’s 44-year-old daughter-in-law, Jarina Awang mentioned that before the incident occurred, her father-in-law (the victim) went to the mosque to look at information about a religious lecture that had been posted there.
“Every morning, my father-in-law would go to the mosque for morning prayer. However, today, when he was looking at the information regarding the religious lecture, he saw an unidentified individual on a motorcycle coming in his direction,” Jarina added.
“That person continued to spill oil before lighting the fire. The mosque members who were aware of this incident hurried to help put off the fire and to take off his clothes before one of them called my brother-in-law,” she further explained.
Jarina disclosed that her 41-year-old brother-in-law, along with his wife rushed to the mosque and brought the victim to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah to receive treatment. She too claimed that her brother-in-law has filed a police report at Setar District Police Station and they hoped that the police could arrest the criminal as soon as possible.
Another followed up report by Harian Metro stated that Nordin, the guard of the mosque, who was the first witness to this horrifying incident, mentioned that the victim does not have any enemy, hence, he does not know the real intention of the criminal.
Setar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin stated that this case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code and investigations are still ongoing.
