Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will provide a 24-hour train service from February 9 to 12 to accommodate worshippers and visitors during the Thaipusam period. This special service will be available at all KTM Komuter stations in the Klang Valley, with free rides on February 10 and 11. The initiative will run for four days and three nights, ensuring smooth and convenient transportation for devotees and the general public.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today that the initiative aims to cater to the increased number of Hindu devotees and visitors during the celebration, which falls on Tuesday next week.
Currently, KTM Komuter operates 96 trips daily. However, to accommodate the surge in passengers, KTMB will introduce 44 additional trips per day, increasing the total to 140 on peak days, particularly on Saturday when worshippers are expected to be at their highest numbers.
"In total, over the four days and three nights, 118 additional services will be provided, bringing the total number of trips during this period to 494," Loke stated.
Additional trains will operate beyond the usual last train schedule, with services starting at 9.55 pm from Pulau Sebang to Batu Caves and 9.30 pm from Klang to Batu Caves. Passengers at KL Sentral will benefit from more frequent services, running every 30 minutes from 9:30 am onwards, compared to the usual one-hour intervals.
Authorities estimate that approximately 500,000 passengers will utilize the service, marking a 10% increase from last year's Thaipusam period.
KTMB has been preparing since early January to ensure seamless travel for worshippers heading to key destinations such as Kuala Selangor, the Sri Subramaniar Temple, and Batu Caves. Enhancements include improved passenger exit regulations, expanded waiting areas, and additional handrails at stations.
"In terms of safety, police personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth crowd control and security. Additionally, all trains will undergo thorough inspections to ensure they are in optimal condition. Shuttle buses will also be arranged to complement train services," Loke added.
He urged passengers to plan their journeys in advance and ensure they have valid payment methods such as a debit card, credit card, or Touch n Go card before boarding.
"With these improvements, we hope to provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for all Thaipusam visitors," he said.
The initiative reflects KTMB's commitment to supporting cultural and religious events in Malaysia, ensuring convenient and accessible public transport for all.
