Prominent PAS lawmaker, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, has been prohibited from making any public statements regarding his criminal sedition hearing. This development comes after two Sessions Courts granted the prosecution's request for a gag order to prevent the caretaker Kedah Menteri Besar from making prejudicial statements concerning the case.
Solicitor-General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh sought the gag order after the court heard the charges against Sanusi. He is accused of making seditious remarks that could incite disloyalty towards any Ruler.
"We are applying for a gag order to prevent the accused from making any comments to the public until the case is disposed of," he stated concisely.
Sanusi's lead counsel, Datuk Shaharudin Ali, did not oppose the application.
The incumbent Jeneri assemblyman allegedly made a seditious and insulting remark concerning the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, near Taman Selayang Mutiara at approximately 11 pm on July 11th.
He is also facing charges for making similar seditious remarks questioning Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement on the King's decree regarding the establishment of a unity government.
If convicted under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act, Sanusi could face a maximum punishment of three years' imprisonment or a fine of RM5,000.
