A 15-year-old girl jumped off the Penang Bridge yesterday evening at Kilometer 3.4 JPP en route to Georgetown. The teenager, originally from Perlis, had booked an e-hailing service from Perai to Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. When they were on the bridge, she had asked the driver to stop as she was feeling nauseous and possibly wanting to vomit. It was then when the driver was startled when the girl disappeared suddenly.
Suspicions arose that the girl had used another person's account to book the e-hailing service, given that the name shown on the application didn't match the one on her school uniform.
Subsequently, a few fishermen witnessed her jump and plunge into the sea, rushing to her aid. Hashim Mohd Said, a 58-year-old fishing boat operator, recounted that when they rescued the girl, she was floating without struggle, appearing disoriented.
"Another crew member and I swiftly lifted the victim onto the boat and transported her back to the Marine Police Team (PPM) jetty before handing her over to the authorities," he said.
Hashim has been operating the fishing boat for 40 years and has rescued numerous individuals who have leapt from the JPP.
"Our boat is always prepared to aid in rescues whenever required, and we assist search and rescue teams in locating the bodies of those lost at sea," he added.
