Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has urged its graduates to maintain decorum and professionalism during convocation ceremonies, discouraging gestures that may disrupt the event's solemnity. The reminder follows the release of a TikTok video by the university that went viral, offering a glimpse into what constitutes proper and improper behavior on stage.

Graduation ceremonies are symbolic milestones, representing years of hard work and the beginning of new journeys. They are also deeply rooted in tradition, with formalities designed to honor the achievements of graduates in a respectful and meaningful way.
UiTM's viral video, shared during its 100th convocation ceremony on November 13, highlighted the importance of upholding these traditions. The video showcased blurred images of graduates making unconventional gestures, such as the victory sign, finger hearts, rockstar hand signs, thumbs-up, waving, and even blowing kisses.
While these actions may reflect joy and excitement, UiTM emphasized that they are not suitable for such a formal occasion. Instead, the university demonstrated the appropriate way to receive a convocation scroll: taking it with both hands, holding it neatly by the side, smiling modestly, and exiting the stage with composure.
"Graduates are reminded not to perform such actions on stage. Please respect the graduation ceremony," the video stated.
Since its release, the video has sparked widespread attention online, amassing over 3.6 million views, 170.5k likes, 19k shares, and 4,047 comments. The discussion it ignited reflects differing opinions about the balance between individuality and tradition.
Supporters of UiTM's stance argue that convocation ceremonies are events of shared significance, where respect for formal traditions should take precedence. Others, however, suggest that small gestures of celebration could enhance the joy of the occasion without diminishing its importance.
As graduates celebrate this significant milestone, UiTM hopes they will embrace the values of respect and tradition that form the foundation of the event. The university's reminder serves as a call for everyone to honor the gravity of the moment while cherishing the memories it creates.
