Subash Abdullah, a 55-year-old tuition teacher from Cheras Perdana, has proven that determination knows no age limit after scoring 12A's in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
For over seven years, Subash has been retaking the SPM, including his most recent attempt last July. However, his goal was never about chasing better grades or personal glory; it was about understanding the exam system better and inspiring his students.
"As a tuition teacher for Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, and Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, I believe the best way to guide my students is by experiencing the exam myself," he said.
According to NST, Subash added that sitting for the papers allowed him to teach accurate answering techniques and motivate his students to strive for excellence.
One of his greatest joys was sharing the exam hall experience with teenagers, which he described as "feeling 17 again," though he admitted the nerves were very real.
He also faced a personal challenge with the Tasawwur Islam paper, as he only embraced Islam seven years ago, but he was proud to have secured an A.
Running a tuition centre for the past decade, Subash now plans to sit for the SPM again this year with another 12 subjects on his list.
He hopes his journey inspires students and the wider public alike to pursue their academic goals, reminding everyone that it's never too late.
"I encourage anyone, even parents, to take the SPM if they wish. Imagine how special it would be if families sat for the exams together, it would not only motivate the children but also strengthen family bonds," he said.
