In a recent incident that reminds us just how tricky scams can be in our digital age, Malaysian Goh Ching Soon has recentrly shared his unsettling encounter with a scammer pretending to be a Shopee representative.
Goh's unexpected ordeal started with a surprising phone call. On the other end of the line was someone claiming to be from Shopee, the popular e-commerce platform. Goh was supposedly a lucky winner of a Shopee prize, according to the caller. To make the call seem legit, the scammer even tossed out a bunch of Goh's personal info, including his home address.
But here's where things got seriously weird. The impostor said they needed only one thing from Goh proof that he'd recently made a payment on Shopee. They insisted that with that confirmation, they could quickly send him his prize without needing anything more from him.
A wave of skepticism swept over Goh as he tried to wrap his head around this odd request. Something just didn't feel right. His instincts told him to be cautious. When they told him not to even look at the notification on his Maybank MAE app but to simply approve it, Goh decided to trust his gut and said no.
After hanging up, Goh immediately checked his bank account. To his shock, he found that RM950 had been taken from his account without his permission. What made this even more bewildering was that he hadn't touched his banking app or agreed to any financial transactions during the entire phone call.
This incident is a stark reminder of how scams are getting more sophisticated, and scammers are willing to go to great lengths to trick people. Goh Ching Soon's nerve-racking experience underlines the importance of being vigilant and careful, even when faced with calls or notifications that seem totally legit.
