In a recent joint operation, the Enforcement Division of JIM Johor State, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) Johor Bahru District and the Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ), detained seven foreign individuals engaged in street begging. The operation is known as Ops Bersama.
In a surprising discovery, these beggars were found to be earning more than RM300 a day or RM10,000 a month. The detainees, aged between 34 and 63, included five beggars, three male Cambodian citizens, two male Thai citizens, and one male and one female Indonesian citizens employed at night market stalls.
Baharuddin Tahir, the Johor State Immigration Director, disclosed that public complaints triggered the operation, focusing on the activities and presence of beggars and foreign donation collectors at the night market. The beggars were found to have used the excuse of supporting tahfiz schools or religious institutions to gain sympathy.
Several of the beggars detained were physically disabled, claiming to earn substantial daily incomes.
