A total of 128 male students at the International Islamic University's residential college (Mahallah) in Jalan Gombak, had to be evacuated following a landslide near the area, last night.
According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Center Chief Zulfikar Jaffar, his team came to the location to monitor the situation at about 9 PM. "According to the students, the landslide happened at 6.45 PM during heavy rain. Due to the severity of the landslide, IIUM has then ordered all 128 male students to vacate the building immediately," he explained.
After further inspection, no cracks were detected on the walls or floor of the building. However, the fire and rescue team did discover sediment with an estimated area of five square meters with a depth of about three meters.
The occurrence of landslides has been quite frequent, as of late. Particularly, IIUM management has been requested by their students to take swift action regarding their safety.
