18-Year-Old Indonesian Maid Jailed For Poisoning Employer's Children By Putting Dettol Inside Their Ribena Drinks, Claims To Have Been Abused
In a distressing incident in Singapore, an underage Indonesian maid, Mila Rindi Antika, mixed Dettol antiseptic into a bottle of Ribena cordial, risking the health of three individuals, including two young children.
Thankfully, the trio did not suffer any illness after consuming the contaminated drink. However, the employer of 18-year-old Mila promptly alerted the authorities on August 6th, 2023.
During the trial, Mila claimed emotional abuse and insufficient food as reasons for her actions. Despite her claims, a medical examination didn't indicate that she was underweight.
Mila admitted to committing the offense to avoid work, resulting in her sentencing to four months' jail after pleading guilty to performing a reckless act that could have harmed others.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Phoebe Tan revealed that Mila carried out the act when no one else was present, deliberately placing the Dettol in the cordial bottle, hoping her employers would drink it.
The employer, preparing Ribena for her 32-year-old son and the visiting boys, detected a chemical taste in the drink but dismissed it initially. One of the children also consumed the tainted beverage without complaint. However, suspicions arose when the younger child noticed a peculiar taste. Further investigation uncovered a strong chemical smell emanating from the cup and the Ribena bottle.
Although the employer questioned Mila about the drink, the maid denied any wrongdoing. It wasn't until two days later, upon discovering the Dettol bottle in the cabinet, that the employer informed the authorities.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan emphasized the severity of the offense, urging a stricter sentence due to the potential harm caused to the two young children.
Notably, regulations from the Ministry of Manpower mandate maids to be at least 23 years old during their work permit application, raising questions about Mila's age and potential legal consequences for parties involved.
Mila Rindi Antika received a four-month jail term for her reckless and dangerous actions.
