They’re now saying that cyborg cockroaches have arrived, and we don’t know how to feel.
Based on reports, a group of cockroaches were crawling in and out of tiny gaps in an exhibit with simulated rubble at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.
The live insect-hybrid robots apparently have infrared camera and series of sensors inside them, to use in search and rescue missions.
They are small and species, the Madagascar hissing cockroach, which is about 6cm when fully grown. They are also able to navigate tiny spaces during missions while using minimal amounts of power compared to mini robots.
When they are released into rubble, they can detect life via their infrared cameras, providing front-line responders with info to emergency situations, like an earthquake.
The cyborg cockroaches are currently being developed by the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) together with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Klass Engineering and Solutions.
The 10 cyborg cockroaches are alao being showcased at the expo from 3-5 April, to propose latest innovations in homeland security.
