BRA No. Plate Up For Grabs Despite Complains About It Being Inappropriate, Says JPJ

Even though the three alphabets b, r and a when combines sounds like a woman's undergarment and people might be sensitive about it, JPJ says that in April, they will continue the bidding for the 'BRA' series vehicle registration number.

JPJ told Utusan Malaysia that so far, there are no restrictions on the use of a series of land vehicle registration plates with certain letters.

"Insya-Allah, the number will continue when the time comes after the BQY series ends around next April," said a source from the agency when contacted by Utusan Malaysia here today.

Plate B was first introduced by JPJ in 1971 to replace the SL letter series created by the British as the first state to use the new format since 1948.

The series became very popular in the country after independence because Selangor was the largest economic center before being overtaken by the W plate for the Federal Territory in 1996.

Currently, the advanced state plate has just passed the BQV series before it reaches the turn of the new middle letter, BRA, in May, depending on the vehicle sales situation.

The controversy over the combination of the three alphabets, however, is went viral among some netizens because its pronunciation resembles women's underwear in English.

"That may be just a public perception, but, on behalf of JPJ, such a combination of letters does not even symbolize a specific meaning to any thing," explained the source.

"JPJ currently does not have a specific policy that will ban certain series of letters as done by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore," explained the source.
