In an effort to promote pet adoption from shelters, the Selangor State government is considering a ban on pet stores in the region from selling cats and dogs. This initiative aims to reduce pet abandonment rates and create a more humane approach towards pet ownership.
Ng Sze Han, the Selangor local government, public transportation, and new village development committee chairman, revealed the plans during the Forum Pengurusan Anjing Terbiar Selangor 2023. The event, attended by representatives from local councils and animal welfare organizations, also discussed the use of innovative methods for capturing stray dogs and the establishment of an international-standard Fur Shelter.
Encouraging Adoption and Reducing Pet Abandonment:
Ng Sze Han emphasized the importance of promoting pet adoption and reducing pet abandonment rates. The proposed ban on pet stores selling cats and dogs would encourage the public to adopt pets from shelters instead. By supporting weekly pet adoption programs, like the one outside the IOI mall in Kinrara, where approximately 20 pets are adopted each month, local councils can contribute to reducing pet abandonment rates. The Selangor State government encourages other councils to implement similar adoption programs to make a positive impact.
Innovative Methods for Capturing Stray Dogs:
To address the issue of stray dogs, the Selangor State government recommends the use of the netting method by all local councils. This method, pioneered by the Sabak Bernam District Council, is considered more humane and effective in capturing dogs. However, the looping method can still be used in hard-to-reach locations, such as under vehicles, small holes, or drains. By adopting these methods based on the specific situations, local councils can ensure the safe capture and transfer of stray dogs to dog holding centers, preventing them from being dragged on the ground.
Establishment of an International-Standard Fur Shelter:
The Selangor government is in the final stages of launching an international-standard Fur Shelter on a 1.2-hectare plot of land. Located near the border of Subang Jaya and Cyberjaya, the shelter will accommodate both cats and dogs. In addition to providing a safe haven for stray animals, the shelter will feature a dog park and serve as an educational hub for the public to learn more about stray animals and responsible pet ownership. This initiative aims to raise continuous awareness, education, and understanding among the public.
Challenges and Funding for Animal Welfare:
While acknowledging the challenges in funding animal welfare initiatives, Ng Sze Han emphasized the importance of sustainable approaches. The Fur Shelter will not only promote adoption but also organize various activities to raise funds and educate the public about animal welfare. Non-governmental organizations representing animal groups at the forum requested increased funding for their spay and neuter programs. Despite financial constraints, the Selangor government recognizes the significance of supporting these programs and aims to allocate funds to address the issue effectively.
