The Film "Abang Adik" Makes History As First Chinese-Language Film To Receive Asean Records Recognition

Malaysian film Abang Adik has made history as the first Chinese-language film to receive Asean Records recognition for its outstanding achievements in international awards, festival nominations, and global screenings.

According to the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), the film, directed and written by Jin Ong, has won 28 international awards and received 69 nominations since 2023. It has captivated audiences across multiple countries, including Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Italy, Thailand, and China. In January 2025, Abang Adik is set to premiere in Japan.


The film has also demonstrated impressive box office success, grossing RM5.7 million in Malaysia, HKD2.8 million in Hong Kong, TWD100 million in Taiwan, and RMB3 million in China.


Since its early recognition at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Project Promotion in 2020, Abang Adik has continued to gain international acclaim. It has won prestigious awards at renowned festivals, including the Fribourg International Film Festival, the Far East Film Festival, and the New York Asian Film Festival.

Director Jin Ong expressed his gratitude for the recognition, calling it a significant milestone for the team. Producer Lee Sinje reflected on the film's journey, emphasizing its heartfelt storytelling about marginalized communities.


"We started with a small dream, giving a voice to those often sidelined. We never imagined this journey would resonate with so many hearts across different countries," she said.
