Are vegetables becoming less and accessible to the less fortunate?
The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) have been urged to act quickly to lower the price of vegetables, which has risen by as much as 160 percent over the course of the previous month, according to the Penang Consumers' Association (CAP).
According to CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader, his party has received complaints from retailers who alleged that distributors and wholesalers have also forewarned them of an impending rise in vegetable costs.
"The price of tomatoes (RM4.50 per kilogramme), peanuts (RM6 per kilogramme), and eggplant (RM7 per kilogramme) are now each priced between RM10 to RM12 per kilogramme," he said in a statement. "The price of okra and long beans, which were previously only RM6 per kilogramme, increased by RM16 and RM12, respectively."
He continued by saying that the low-income group will be impacted by the increase in product prices, thus it must be tackled immediately.
