We Malaysians all know that when the durian season arrives, another fruit that we can look forward to eating is mangosteens. On the outside, it has a hard purple skin but after breaking it open, carefully without letting the purple skin stain your t-shirt, we get to enjoy the juicy sweet and sourness of the white flesh.
It is a true delight, especially after gulping down over 10 durians! They go together like peanut butter and jam!
While we have grown to know and love mangosteens, there are many people outside of Southeast Asia who have no idea what a mangosteen is and how it is supposed to be eaten!
Recently, some netizens from China took to Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media app, to share their experience of trying this exotic fruit.
They shared some photos of the fruit and it seems like instead of peeling the skin, they just bit into the fruit like you would an apple!
They tried this apple-biting technique, not one, but multiple times but sadly never got to taste the delicious flesh. Disappointed, they shared that the fruits were not only expensive but also taste bad.
One of the users even posted the photo as a warning to others not to buy it because they had saved a lot of money to buy the fruit only to get tricked!
Another user described the fruit as bitter, acidic and expensive!
In another post, you can even see the bitten-into fruits thrown away in the rubbish bin! They threw it away without even trying the fleshy centre, thinking that the hard skin was actually the flesh!
It is so sad that they spend a lot of money without even trying the part of the fruit that is supposed to be eaten.
Well, in case there are still people out there who don't know how to open mangosteens, here's a tutorial:
Remember the purple part is not for eating, eat the white part only!
