A recent directive from Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, mandating that school canteens operate as usual throughout Ramadan, has drawn criticism from the political party PAS (Parti Islam SeMalaysia).

Ahmad Yahaya, the Head of PAS Central Ulama Council, voiced concerns over what he deemed an excessive directive, suggesting that non-Muslim students could bring packed meals and eat in designated areas without the need for canteens to remain open. He expressed the view that such an order lacked respect for Ramadan and may unnecessarily generate controversy.

In a statement reported by Malaysia Kini, Ahmad Yahaya emphasized that situations like these could unfold harmoniously without the need for a directive, advocating for a balanced approach to respect the diverse beliefs of students. He stated that promoting education about the significance of fasting during Ramadan, especially among Muslim students, should be prioritized.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek defended the directive, highlighting the importance of educating non-Muslim students about their Muslim peers' fasting practices. She stressed the need for canteens to be open during Ramadan and for educational initiatives, particularly in schools with a significant non-Muslim student population, to foster mutual understanding and respect.

However, Ahmad Yahaya's directive has sparked disagreement among netizens, particularly on Twitter. Users are advocating for more inclusivity and consideration for non-Muslim students who are not fasting. 

Many have raised concerns about the practicality of closing canteens during Ramadan, questioning where non-Muslim students would go to eat. Some argue that it is not obligatory for children to fast, stating, "Where would the non-Muslim students go to eat? Besides, it's not 'wajib' (obligatory) for children to fast." 

Another user stressed the importance of respecting each other's beliefs and suggested keeping the canteen open to cater to those who need it. They stated, "Just keep the canteen open so the canteen operator could keep earning. Respect each other and other's beliefs."
