Kluang: Police arrested seven teenagers last night following the beating of a mentally ill man in an oil palm plantation near Layang-Layang town here, last Thursday.
Kluang District Deputy Chief of Police, Deputy Superintendent Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said the suspects, a few locals aged 16 to 18, were arrested around the district at about 9.30pm.
He said that at 9.22pm on February 3, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Kluang District Police Headquarters (IPD) received a report from a man stating that his younger brother had been beaten by a group of men.
"The family also claimed that the incident that happened to the victim in his late 20s was also spread on Facebook through a 14-second video.
"Acting on information, at about 9.30pm yesterday, the police managed to arrest seven teenagers and confiscated several mobile phones for further investigation.
"All the arrests were remanded for four days until this Friday," he said when contacted here today.
Abdul Razak said the initial investigation found that the cause of the incident was believed to be due to the victim making noise near the suspects.
The victim had a record of mental illness treatment at Permai Hospital and as a result of the incident he suffered bruises on both hands and feet.
"There is no element of gangsterism and the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code," he said.
