Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Premier of Sarawak, has expressed his ambition to create a state-produced robot that can assist people in their daily lives. The inspiration for this endeavor came from 'Grace the Robot,' a nursing assistant robot that garnered attention at the 27th World Congress on Innovation and Technology and the 6th International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (WCIT|IDECS) 2023, recently held in Sarawak.
Abang Johari affirmed the state government's commitment to allocate funds for this innovative project. He also suggested that they find a name for the robot that truly reflects Sarawak's identity, different from 'Grace the Robot,' which, as he noted, has over 4,000 motors in its head alone.
For this project, Abang Johari proposed collaboration between the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Huawei, the multinational technology company. This partnership aims to develop robots that can be utilized in various sectors, particularly healthcare and other everyday activities.
'Grace the Robot' is a product of Hanson Robotics, a company based in Hong Kong, created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
