The state of Terengganu carried out a "public caning" on a Malay man who committed the crime of tryst, attracting nearly a hundred people to watch the execution. This is also the first case in Malaysia where a man faces public caning for illegal tryst.
According to Oriental Daily, the convicted was a 42-year-old widower named Mohd Affendi Awang, who has five children aged between 16 and 21.
The court sentenced him to be publicly caned six times in a mosque and fined RM4,000 for his third offence of khalwat under the Islamic criminal law.
On the day of the execution, nearly a hundred Muslims chose to stay at the scene after finishing their midday prayers, waiting to watch this special punishment. Due to space restrictions, the court only allowed 90 people to enter the auditorium to watch, and the police also sent 40 police officers to maintain order.
Before the caning was carried out, Mohd Affendi Awang was examined by a doctor and confirmed to be in good health before the prison officers carried out six strokes of the cane on him.
The entire caning process took only 2 minutes, with the first 3 lashes falling on the back and the remaining 3 on the buttocks.
