When her mother suddenly passed away due to a heart attack, the final dish she prepared, a delicious chicken sambal, remained untouched on the table. Overwhelmed with sorrow, her children decided to preserve their mother's memory by freezing the entire meal for a staggering four years.
Nurhaida Yusof, a Malay woman residing in Taman Merdeka, received a call on March 5, 2020, informing her of her mother's sudden demise from a heart attack. When the family rushed back home to bid their final farewells, her mother lay lifeless, and on the dining table sat a plate of untouched chicken sambal.
Recalling the morning of her mother's passing, Nurhaida shared that her mother had prepared a pot of chicken sambal for the family. However, she didn't get the chance to eat it as her mother packed it for her to take to work.
"I only managed to kiss her hand and bid her farewell before leaving. Little did I know it would be the last time..."
Returning home, Nurhaida found herself holding her mother's cold hands, unable to come to terms with the loss.
"Even though it has been four years since my mother passed, I still find it hard to accept the reality. I've never been apart from my family since I was young, even when I went to university or started working, I chose to stay in Malacca."
Filled with regret, Nurhaida decided to keep the breakfast her mother had prepared untouched, preserving it in the freezer as a symbol of her longing for her mother.
"Let me freeze my mother's last meal like this, until the plate breaks."
Not only that, she recalled how her mother had been urging her to get married just a week before her passing.
"She kept saying that I was getting older and hoped I would settle down soon, as if she had a premonition of leaving this world."
"Although I have been married for two years now, I still haven't moved on from the pain of losing my mother. Every corner of the house reminds me of the wonderful times we shared."
She emphasized that it's not that she's avoiding facing reality, but that she misses her mother every moment, a feeling one can only understand after losing a loved one.
"If your parents are still with you, cherish the precious moments spent with them. Don't wait until it's too late to regret not spending enough time with them."
