M'sians Dumbfounded After Being Charged RM9 For An Empty Plate And RM15 For Just One Serving Of Kuah At KL Mamak

A recent dining experience at a Mamak stall in KL has sparked controversy after customers expressed outrage over what they claim to be exorbitant charges for basic items.

According to Audrey Lee, who shared her frustration on the "Kepong Chat" Facebook group, she and three friends visited a Mamak stall for a few meals, only to be shocked by the total bill of RM130.60.

Upon scrutinizing the bill, they discovered that an empty plate was priced at RM9, while curry gravy was priced at RM15. This pricing discrepancy left them speechless.

The situation escalated when one of Lee's friends ordered rice with a cabbage dish for RM11.80 and requested just the curry gravy, resulting in a bill of RM26.80, with the gravy "kosong" priced at RM15.

Another friend ordered rendang beef for RM13, sambal prawns for RM15, and curry for RM16, requesting that these dishes be served on an empty plate. To their astonishment, they were charged RM53, including RM9 for the empty plate.

Lee expressed frustration, questioning why curry gravy "kosong" costs RM15 and an empty plate costs RM9. She emphasized their willingness to pay a reasonable amount but found the charges unjustifiable.

However, discrepancies emerged when the receipt uploaded by Lee indicated that the RM9 empty plate was labeled as "flat rice," similar to the RM11.80 rice with cabbage, and the RM15 curry gravy "kosong" was also labeled as regular curry serving, similar to the RM16 curry. This raised doubts about whether these items were indeed the same product.

The incident has sparked discussions among netizens, with many urging others to report the stall to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) for alleged overcharging practices.

While some shared similar experiences of overpricing at Mamak stalls, others questioned why Lee did not seek clarification from the cashier before paying the bill, highlighting the need to consider all perspectives before drawing conclusions.
