In a significant milestone for marine conservation and tourism in Malaysia, two light rail transit (LRT) replica coaches were submerged off the coast of Pulau Tioman, creating an artificial reef. This achievement has been recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR). The event was officiated by the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, at the Berjaya Tioman Resort. The ceremony was attended by the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, and the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.
During his royal address, the Sultan of Pahang highlighted the positive impact this initiative by Yayasan Al-Sultan Abdullah (Yasa) could have on the resort island. "I hope this artificial reef will serve as an attraction for visitors, especially diving enthusiasts," he said.
According to Bernama, the Sultan elaborated on the environmental benefits, stating, "I hope that this artificial reef will aid in preserving the marine ecosystem around Pulau Tioman, and I welcome further efforts to rehabilitate coral reefs here." He also urged those responsible to maintain the LRT coaches in good condition to prevent any accidents.
The general manager of Yasa, Fakhrul Islam Juhali, shared that the submersion involved 60 divers. Fakhrul emphasized the project's ecological goals, saying, "This site was designed to create a breeding ground for fish and other marine life, which can help enhance the sustainability of its marine biodiversity."
Fakhrul also expressed hopes that the new dive site would boost the local economy by attracting more tourists to Pulau Tioman. "We also hope this dive site will boost the local economy by drawing more tourists to Pulau Tioman," he added.
