Chukai: Two men in a Perodua Myvi fled after colliding with a motorcyclist at Kilometer 269, East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2), near Cheneh, yesterday.
In the 1.15pm incident, the motorcyclist, Zolkafli Ahmad, 57, died at the scene.
Kemaman District Police Chief, Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan said, during the incident, the victim was on his way from Kuantan to return to his house in Kerteh.
Upon arriving at the scene, a car hit the back of the motorcycle causing the victim to be thrown into a drain there and died at the scene due to severe head injuries.
"However, the two suspects fled towards Kuala Terengganu, but had to stop at the side of the highway because their car was damaged," he said in a press conference at the Kemaman District Police Headquarters, last night.
He said a highway user who stopped to help the victim, searched for the car before finding the driver and passenger of the car, about two kilometers from the scene.
He asked the two suspects why they did not stop after hitting and killing the victim while recording the whole conversation and the damage to the vehicle. Then, he stopped another car asking them to make a police report since he had no service within that area. While he did that, the two suspects then got into the young man's car before speeding off with his vehicle, a Nissan Grand Livina,
"The young man then came to the Kemaman District Police Headquarters at about 3pm to lodge a police report," he said.
According to him, as the sped off, the almost hit his mother who was with him at the time of the incident.
Hanyan said the two suspects were being hunted and the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
In the meantime, he said, the victim's body was taken to Kemaman Hospital.
