A devastating landslide in Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri, early Wednesday morning (29 January) has left four people dead, with two others still missing.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department reported receiving a distress call at 2.58 am, confirming that six individuals, including two women, three girls, and a boy, were feared trapped beneath the rubble.
"A man was rescued unharmed. As of 3.48 am, efforts to retrieve the victims were still ongoing", said a department spokesperson.
The first confirmed fatality, a 17-year-old boy, was found at 6.17am, followed by a second unidentified body at 8.55am. By 11.38am, rescuers had discovered two more victims, bringing the death toll to four.
"The third body was recovered at about 11.38am and the fourth body about 10 minutes later. Efforts to find another victim, a woman, are ongoing," the Operations Center stated.
The rescue mission, involving 15 personnel and four vehicles from the Miri Sentral and Lopeng Fire and Rescue Stations, continues in the hopes to find the rest.
