Malaysia's highly anticipated Electric Train Service (ETS) extension from Gemas to Johor Bahru is nearing completion and is expected to launch in August. This new rail link promises to revolutionize travel between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, cutting journey times and offering a modern, high-speed alternative to existing options.

The RM9.5 billion project will slash travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to just 4.5 hours, significantly improving the current seven-hour journey via diesel train. The new electrified double-track system will support speeds of up to 140 km/h, with key stops at Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, and JB Sentral, enhancing connectivity for passengers along the route.

The arrival of the first ETS3 train set in Malaysia marks a major milestone for the project. Each train will feature 312 seats, WiFi connectivity, USB charging ports, and ample luggage space, ensuring a comfortable experience for travelers.

Despite facing multiple delays since construction began in 2017, including issues with land acquisition and electricity supply testing, the project remains a top priority for the government. YTL Construction, in partnership with SIPP Rail, is leading the development of the 192km extension. Both the Ministry of Transport and the Johor state government view the project as a strategic necessity for improving intercity travel.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has reaffirmed the state's commitment to the ETS expansion, along with the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is scheduled to open in January 2027.

Once fully operational, the ETS service is expected to accommodate around 3,000 passengers daily between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, providing a reliable and efficient alternative to driving. The ETS system has already proven popular on existing routes, such as Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh, where tickets often sell out weeks in advance. The extension to Johor Bahru is expected to see similar demand, reflecting strong public interest in high-speed rail travel.

With its modern amenities and reduced travel time, the new ETS line will offer a game-changing transport option for Malaysians, making long-distance travel more accessible, convenient, and sustainable.
