In the latest social media storm, a Malaysian TikToker has stirred controversy by claiming that his university is "indebted" to him because he supposedly gave them money to purchase his degree certificate. The claims, which quickly went viral, have prompted a swift and stern response from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).
In an official statement released on the evening of August 9, UniSZA categorically denied the allegations, emphasizing that the institution does not sell academic certificates under any circumstances. The university expressed deep concern over the spread of such false information, which it fears could tarnish its reputation and the value of its academic programs.
To address the situation, UniSZA confirmed that it has lodged a police report against the TikToker to curb the dissemination of misinformation. The university's statement underlined its commitment to upholding the quality and integrity of its Diploma and Degree programs, which are regularly audited by academic bodies and professionals.
"We will not compromise in maintaining the quality of our Diploma and Degree programs. We are always audited by Academic Bodies and Professionals to maintain the quality of our education, and the graduates that we produce," the statement read.
Furthermore, UniSZA made it clear that it would pursue legal action against any individual or party spreading false information that could damage the university's reputation. The institution also urged the public to verify the authenticity of information before making comments or sharing content online.
The controversy began when the TikToker, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, posted a video expressing his dissatisfaction with his academic qualifications. In the video, he claimed that his degree had not helped him achieve his life goals and went so far as to suggest that a degree is something people "buy" rather than earn through the pursuit of knowledge.
"What do you mean knowledge? A degree is something that we buy. We can get knowledge someplace else," the TikToker stated in the video.
UniSZA also confirmed that the individual in question is no longer a student at the university.
The TikToker's comments have sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users criticizing his remarks as dismissive of the hard work and dedication that go into earning a degree. Others, however, have expressed empathy, citing the challenges faced by graduates in securing jobs that align with their academic qualifications.
As the controversy continues to unfold, UniSZA's firm stance on the matter serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the integrity of educational institutions and the degrees they confer.
