"We're Broke!" Suspended MYAirline Staff Have Yet To Receive Their Outstanding Salaries Since Last Year's Shutdown Despite 7-Month Wait

MYAirline, which abruptly halted operations on October 12th last year, leaving over 500 employees in limbo, continues to face scrutiny and criticism for its failure to fulfill financial obligations, including paying employees' salaries.

Despite assurances made earlier by the airline, employees have yet to receive their outstanding wages. An unnamed employee disclosed to "The Malaysian Insight" that although they still received pay slips, no deductions reached statutory bodies like the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Social Security Organization (SOCSO), or the Inland Revenue Board.

MYAirline spokesperson Azharuddin vaguely mentioned that the airline is working internally to resolve issues, offering no further elaboration.

Employees, however, express frustration and uncertainty. One employee, known only as Y, revealed receiving contradictory information about job continuity and salary disbursements. Some received notices stating that they wouldn't receive salaries from May 1st.

The lack of clarity has left employees in a precarious situation. Many remain with MYAirline due to limited job prospects in the aviation industry. The financial strain is palpable, with employees facing difficulties in meeting basic needs and supporting their families.

Employee Z shared his ordeal, having depleted savings and sold assets to survive. He lamented being unable to afford his son's education after selling his house.

Similarly, employee M depleted his savings and had to move in with his parents. Some colleagues faced even worse situations, with cars repossessed and facing eviction due to unpaid loans and rent.

The sudden shutdown of MYAirline last October due to financial pressures exacerbated the employees' plight. Despite assurances from authorities, such as Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook, about potential investors, no concrete solutions have emerged.

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress urged MYAirline to prioritize settling overdue wages rather than waiting for new investors. However, MYAirline's spokesperson Azharuddin mentioned ongoing negotiations with interested investors as of April 26th, expressing hope for a resolution soon.
