A peculiar incident involving a Chinese man trapped in an abandoned well for three days in Thailand has sparked a mix of amusement and admiration on social media in China. The man's cries for help were mistaken by nearby villagers for ghostly wails, leading to an unusual series of events.
According to South China Morning Post, the incident occurred on November 24 in Mae Sot, a district in Tak province near the Thai-Myanmar border. Villagers reported hearing eerie sounds emanating from a remote forest but, fearing supernatural activity, chose not to investigate.
When local police and rescue teams ventured into the forest, they were startled to hear faint responses to their calls. Following the sounds, they discovered 22-year-old Liu Chuanyi trapped at the bottom of a 12-meter-deep dry well. Liu was in a frail condition, suffering from a fractured left wrist, a concussion, and multiple bruises.
Liu, who had been without sustenance for three days and nights, shared through a translator that he rationed his energy by shouting for help only once an hour. Despite his weakened state, he managed to alert the rescuers during their search.
The rescue operation, which took about 30 minutes, brought Liu to safety. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and is now recovering.
Authorities are investigating how Liu, who was near the Thailand-Myanmar border, ended up in the area. Officials suspect he wandered into the forest and accidentally fell into the well while trying to find his way out. Immigration authorities have also been involved to determine the circumstances surrounding his presence in Thailand.
Meanwhile, local officials have announced plans to seal the abandoned well to prevent similar incidents.
Residents near the forest had been hearing Liu's cries since the first night he fell into the well. However, as the sounds grew louder in the dark, villagers believed them to be supernatural phenomena and avoided the area entirely.
One online commenter joked, "A Chinese man shouting for help in the middle of nowhere? Of course, the locals cant understand the language and might think it was a wizard uttering spells."
"Kudos to his strength and stamina. Struggling for three days and nights but still yelling; this guy is truly impressive!" commented another.
