A 74-year-old tourist from China tragically lost his life after a tree branch fell on him during a visit to the Rainforest Discovery Center (RDC) at Sepilok in Sandakan on Tuesday afternoon (Jan 21).
The incident occurred while the man was exploring the popular ecotourism site, known for its lush greenery and vibrant biodiversity. The falling branch struck him on the head, causing severe injuries. Emergency responders quickly transported him to the hospital in an ambulance, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Chief Conservator of Forests, Datuk Frederick Kugan, expressed his condolences to the family, calling the event a calamity.
"This is a rather unfortunate incident beyond our control, and the Forestry Department sympathises with the family members. We will assist whatever is necessary in this time of difficulties," he said.
