An elderly patient has suffered three stab wounds after he was attacked by a psychiatric patient in the emergency waiting area of the Selayang Hospital.
At the time of the incident, every ward in the hospital was occupied, and there were scores of people waiting in line for treatments at the emergency unit. Numerous patients were reportedly forced to wait long hours to be attended to.
The victim stabbed twice in the torso and once in the back by the mental patient, who had seized a knife from the pantry of the staff nurse. The injuries were so severe that he needed immediate operation.
The Selayang Hospital was recently in the news not too long ago when a group of patients lashed out at the persons in duty for making them wait too long to be treated.
Doctors and nurses in Malaysia have been trying to highlight the grave issues of overcrowding at hospitals' emergency departments due to staffing shortages and patient overflow.
KKM says they are currently working on resolving these issues.
