A few days ago, a video of a police tow truck went viral because of the rather peculiar way it was towing a car. The lorry was towing it UPSIDE DOWN!
Yes, you read that right, it was getting towed upside down. Its roof was getting dragged all over the road.
Confused? Yeah, we were all in the same boat. Did they accidentally hook it up wrongly? Was it really the police? What happened?
Today, the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) confirmed footage of a car being towed upside down by a police tow truck was in fact real! It was the police!
Chairman of JSPT Kuala Lumpur, Assistant Commissioner Sarifudin Mohd. Salleh said the viral video on social media happened on December 18 at about 10.55 am.
“The results of the investigation found that the incident took place in Jalan Syed Putra near SJK (C) Kuan Cheng, Kuala Lumpur.
“The JSPT KL Towing Unit towed a white Proton Saga BLM car that overturned on the shoulder of the road near the drain due to an accident when it was raining.
"The vehicle could not be turned to the original position because there was a drain nearby and if pulled in that position, it is likely that both rear tires would be stuck in the drain," he said in a media statement today.
Sarifudin said the car could only be returned to its original position if it was reversed on a flat surface.
He said, after obtaining the consent of the driver of the vehicle, the car was pulled five meters above the road, stopped and returned to its original position.
He explained that the action had to be taken to ensure the safety of other road users as well as the owners of the vehicles.
"JSPT KL advises road users to always be careful when driving on wet roads due to rain," he said.
