Not all beauty products are meant to enhance our beauty. Some can even damage it or fade it completely. This is where consumer awareness plays a crucial part in ensuring you won‘t fall victim to another false marketing.
Want to know which beauty products don't belong on your face? Or anywhere near you for that matter? Read on.
1. Expired Mascara
Some people like to hoard their mascaras, and that's fine. Just remember to toss them out once they're past their expiration date. Mascaras that have been used too long tend to breed bacteria or microbes and in the worst of cases, can make a person go blind. So yes if you ask me; expired mascara is definitely one of the scariest beauty products to exist.
After three months, mascaras should belong in the bin.
2. Formaldehyde in Hair Straighteners
Some hair straightener brands, when investigated, have been found guilty of using Formaldehyde, a type of carcinogen, in their products. If you're in Malaysia though, take a breath of relief as most of the brands tested aren't even sold here. But it pays to be careful.
If you're curious about the brands, read about them here.
3. Lead in Lipstick
You'd be surprised at how many brands have been secretly putting lead in their lipsticks. If you google, "brands that use lead in their lipsticks" you'll find plenty. As consumers, you owe it to yourself to do even the slightest research on your favorite brands and if they actually have your best interests at heart.
4. Mercury In Skin-Whitening Creams
The infamous skin-lightening products you can find all over Malaysia with the painfully cringy repackaged branding and neon-colored creams. It is definitely one of the scariest beauty products to ever exist knowing what kind of damage it'd do to your skin.
Love the skin you're born in. The marketing of skin-lightening products only feeds into the toxic notion that lighter skin is superior, which it isn't.
It's not enough to be a pack of sheep following whatever's next in trend. A part of being a smart consumer is knowing exactly what you're paying for. Beauty doesn't have to be pain, ladies.
