Even if there are fewer than 10% non-Muslim students at the school, education minister Fadhlina Sidek urged school canteen operators to remain open throughout Ramadan.
"There is no need to shut down the canteen because some of our Muslim pupils are not compelled to fast. I don't want to see children eating next to drains or in a storage room," she said at a press conference yesterday.
Previously, Siti Normah Md Desa, secretary-general of PPKSM, the Ministry of Education (MoE) ought to let school administrations and canteen operators decide whether to open school canteens depending on the needs of the students.
She explained that in order for the school canteens to remain open, the operators would need to bear the operational expenses that would probably exceed the revenue generated.
